Epileptic fit [top]

  • Urinary and/or faecal incontinence urinary incontinence faecal incontinence
  • History of tonic-clinic seizure with prolonged post-ictal period and tongue-biting

Faecal impaction with overflow [top]

  • Recurrent diarrhoea alternating with constipation or faecal incontinence
  • Usually elderly patient
  • Impacted faeces palpable on PR examination

Epilepsy [top]

  • Tonic-clonic seizure, syncope
  • Previous history of seizures if known epilepsy
  • Prolonged 'post-ictal' recovery period
  • Incontinence of faeces / urine urinary incontinence faecal incontinence

Lumbar disc prolapse [top]

  • Sudden onset of back pain in association with minor trauma such as lifting or coughing acute back pain
  • Large anterior prolapse: Cauda equina syndrome - leg weakness, numbness of perineum, faecal incontinence, urinary retention
  • Posterior prolapse: Shooting pain radiating to thigh, calf 'sciatica'

Dementia [top]

  • Urinary and/or faecal incontinence urinary incontinence faecal incontinence
  • Progressive amnesia and confusion,
  • Usually elderly
  • Can have acute on chronic deterioration with acute illness

Delerium [top]

  • Urinary and/or faecal incontinence urinary incontinence faecal incontinence
  • Reversible confusion secondary to acute illness or metabolic disturbance
  • Usually elderly
